Spread the fun: Graham clubs Carrboro

August 23, 2008 - 8:37AM Bob Sutton / Times-News

GRAHAM - Graham's opening act had so many starring characters in the early going it was tough to keep up.
That's what Carrboro found out, too.

The host Red Devils rolled to a 62-6 victory in Mid-State 2-A Conference football to start the season Friday night.

"We came out here and didn't take them light," said Graham's Blake Throneburg, who shared the quarterbacking duties and played in the defensive secondary. "It's incredible how much we've improved since last year."

The Red Devils' first five touchdowns were scored by five different players. The contributions were spread around in such a way that by the end seven Graham players had scored touchdowns and two others figured into the scoring.

"It keeps everybody sharp," Graham coach Mike McCauley said. "The offensive group found what was available. That's why so many people touched the ball."

Running back Brenden Cundiff rushed for 159 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns. Starting quarterback Dominique Pass began the scoring with a 37-yard run and later reached the end zone on a 5-yard burst. He threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Seth Caison on Caison's first play from scrimmage (other than extra points) late in the first quarter.

Throneburg tossed a 22-yard scoring strike to Marquise Richmond and ran for a 5-yard touchdown.

Graham racked up 394 rushing yards, including Saykwan Holmes' 3-yard touchdown run and Jon Kenion's 6-yard scoring run. McCauley liked what the offensive line did throughout the game.

"The first night, the offensive line - that's all I could ask for," Cundiff said. "... He put everybody in. Let everybody get some reps."
The Red Devils didn't commit a turnover and rarely found themselves in binds.

"The line did a great job up front," said Throneburg, who threw for 68 yards and rushed for 68 yards.

Pass didn't return after injuring his knee with 8:43 left in the third quarter, but he said after the game that he was fine. Caison, the starting quarterback most of last season, moved to fullback and receiver but was limited by a groin injury.

Graham also opened last year with a convincing victory against the Jaguars. Carrboro, a second-year school, compiled 257 yards of total offense through three quarters, but was hampered by inconsistency, four turnovers and a blocked punt by Graham's Robert Googe.

Carrboro quarterback Derek Bryant completed 13 of 30 passes. Kenion intercepted one of his first-quarter attempts.
Carrboro coach Jason Tudryn was far from despondent.

"I think it was a football game," he said. "It wasn't like last year. I think our kids were physical at times."

Graham's defense played an outstanding game against the run.  The Red Devils only allowed 63 total rushing yards on 29 attempts. Carrboro was thrown for 48 loss yards, including 4 sacks by the Devils.  The 4th quarter saw Graham allow one positive rushing play of 18 yards, while recording 4 plays of (-22) yards.

Next up on the Red Devil's schedule-a trip to Siler City to take on the Jets of Jordan Matthews.
