Orange Puts the Squeeze on Graham

Orange pulls away from Graham

HILLSBOROUGH - It's coming together for Orange in what's shaping up as its best football season in 15 years.
The Panthers provided more evidence of that Thursday night as visiting Graham came unraveled in Orange's 35-7 victory in a Mid-State 2-A Conference game.
"It got away from us from the start," Graham coach Mike McCauley said. "It was one of those things - it wasn't our night."
Orange (6-4 overall, 4-1 Mid-State 2-A Conference) remained in contention for a league championship. Graham (3-7, 2-3) had its state-playoff chances diminish, counting on its regular-season finale a week from tonight at Cummings High School to find its way into the postseason field.
Orange scored the go-ahead touchdown with nine seconds left in the first half on quarterback Luke Hawksworth's 1-yard sneak. Graham never recovered.
Three running backs racked up 70 or more yards for the Panthers. Thomas Jones gained 86 yards on 12 carries, Mike Williams picked up 81 yards on nine attempts and Drevis Torain added 71 yards on 13 carries.
The Red Devils, losing their second game in four nights, never figured out how to slow down Orange's sweep plays.
But the big play came at the end of Graham's first possession of the second half. A wayward snap with the Red Devils in punt formation gave Orange the ball at the Graham 32-yard line. Three plays later, Williams was in the end zone on a 7-yard run for his second touchdown of the game.

Orange's Darren McCleod intercepted Graham quarterback Blake Throneburg on the next play from scrimmage, with his return setting up the Panthers at the Graham 20. It took the Panthers five plays to score, with Jones running in from 9 yards out.
"It happens, somebody is going to get some breaks," Orange coach Dickie Schock said. "They get away in a hurry."
Schock said injuries to players in the offensive backfield earlier in the season created depth for the Panthers, who now have several options.
"It helps us to have different backs and they all do something different well," Schock said.
Trailing 28-7, Graham reached the Orange 5-yard line on backup quarterback Seth Caison's back-to-back runs that accounted for 37 total yards. But he was sacked on the next two plays and, on the first play of the fourth quarter, threw an incompletion to the end zone on fourth down.
By then, it was clear the Red Devils had too many details go awry.
"You can't mess up on the little things," McCauley said. "We had to be solid in everything."
Torain scored the last touchdown on a 4-yard run. Hawksworth finished 5-for-10 passing, completing his last five attempts.
Orange's Nicholas Shriner and Troy Jones had interceptions, with Jones returning his to the Graham 1-yard line on the last play of the first half. Dylan Phillips had fumble recovery for Graham.
Graham running back Brenden Cundiff rushed for 110 yards on 17 carries. The rest of the offense accounted for 69 yards.
This game was played Thursday night because Orange officials couldn't secure enough police to work tonight with Halloween activities in Chapel Hill requiring massive attention from the county's law enforcement.
